Mark Bartlett played guitar and sang in Hieronymus Firebrain from 1991 to 1994. He is an avid collector of religious artifacts and owns several actual splinters of the cross, as well as a vial of Mohammed's sweat. He quit HF in 1994 to go on an extended quest for hagiophilic items. Good luck, Mark!
Russ was scientifically bred from generations of timekeepers. He speaks a futuristic language that is beamed directly into one's brain, thus enabling him to form a psychic link with the rest of the band he plays with. He played with Hieronymus Firebrain from 1991 (after answering an ad in BAM) 'til it's death in 1994, and continued onto Jack & Jill. He also plays in the Sonya Hunter Band and has sat in with many other SF Bay Area bands, including MK Ultra, Alice Bierhorst and Sideways. Everyday he tells himself...
Joe Byrnes moved to San Francisco from Tucson with his band Broken Horse. They have appeared on the Tucson bands compilation, "Yeah, but it's a Dry Heat", and have been recording a full length CD recently. Joe played with 5th Business for the year of 1994. He is presently playing with Paula Frazer in Tarnation. He rides a 1958 BSA A-10.
Anne was the bass player in the legendary San Francisco band, the Whitefronts. With many of them, she moved to Questa, New Mexico, where they have set up a recording studio and play with the Lords of Howling. She is a member of the band DENT, if and when it exists. She also appears briefly on the HF cd "There", singing backup vocals.
Daughter of Anne and Dave, can be heard laughing and screaming on various Lords of Howling tapes, and on the song "It's Fine" on the HF CD "There".
Dave also played in the Whitefronts, playing guitar and trumpet. While doing so, he and Katl (another Whitefront) were recruited by Camper Van Beethoven to be the "horn section". They toured with CVB and recorded with them on the "Our beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart" record. Dave is a member of the Lords of Howling and DENT. He also acted as engineer on the HF record "There".
Todd is Dave's brother, he is a guitar player and singer in the band Granfaloon Bus. They have one CD out on Discobolus Records (so far anyway, a new one soon) and a 7" single.
Ted is a master ceramicist, an acclaimed maker of teapots and stained glass windows. He sculpted basslines for HF from 1991 to 1994. He presently plays in a band called Fuck. Ted lives in the East Bay, which is pig latin for 'Beast'.
Jason played guitar in A Great Laugh. Current whereabouts are unknown.
The Balthus (and brother of) of his generation, Richard Burgan Gann is a painter and writer of fiction. (actually, we're not sure whether what he paints is fiction or not. ) He produced the covers for the three HF records. He presently lives in Providence, RI. and works for the Center for Foreign Policy Development. (yeah, right!) contact him at rbgann@brown.edu.
Julia heads Julia Hamblin Design in Santa Cruz, Ca. She is personally responsible for the Magnetic logo, as well as the layouts of the three HF CDs. JH Design have designed many things that have seeped into your mind through unwary eyes and have been given undue attention for no reason whatsoever, but, hey, that's how design works. Contact her at Hamblin@aol.com
Coming from the illustrious background as the lead guitarist in Strange Creek and then later mesmerizing all as lead guitarist for the Ophelias, David was a shoe-in as lead guitarist for the Monks of Doom when Chris Molla departed. David also played briefly in an early version of HF until he quit to go on tour with CVB. After the breakup of CVB, he remained full time with the Monks until their demise, whereupon he took up behind-the-scenes lead guitar playing for the Counting Crows and Papa's Culture. Presently David is playing guitar, mandolin and pedal steel for John Hiatt, doing session work, and can be seen in the Bay Area playing with Blake Davis in Sunkist.
Formerly a choreographer, dancer and singer, Diana was the codirector (with Maggie Martin, presently accordianist with Polkacide) of a Sonoma County troupe called Mixed Company. She sang on the first HF cd, the Storytelling record and is a member of DENT. Presently she declines artistic involvement in favor of experiencing the world one-on-one with no-one watching. Presently in Baltimore studying acupuncture.
Played guitar on the first HF cd. At the time was playing with 501 Spanish Verbs, later Sluggo. (? not sure now)
Victor was the bass player for Camper Van Beethoven from 1983-1990, the bassist and singer in the Monks of Doom 1986-1993. Also played with Eugene Chadbourne 1987-1991 in the legendary band calledFifth Business, which evolved into A Great Laugh, which blew up in 1996. He now plays solo, and sometimes can be seen playing for Mark Goodman's Magnet. He spent much time from 1995-1998 working for ex-Tarnation members Lincoln Allen and Michelle Cernuto in Lava, which he has since quit. He is the Impressario for Magnetic, and a damn good one to boot. Email Victor at Magnetic Motorworks!
Played bass on the first HF cd, at the time also playing in Eskimo. Still does, in fact, as far as we can tell. He wears glasses. He plays some sort of weird-ass bass.
A "powerful rock singer", Alison has made numerous recordings with Chris Xefos at the producer's helm and engines room as well, including the newly released FOG SHOW. Here we have a whole page of her to gawk at... she also plays keyboards in the Loud Family. contact her at grumbelina
Played guitar in Camper Van Beethoven off and on from 1986-1990, and in the Monks of Doom, (1986-1993) after Chris Molla didn't show up to a gig one night in Santa Cruz because nobody showed up to pick him up at the train station in San Jose. And as if that isn't enough devotion for one soul, he also played with A Great Laugh and sometimes backing up Victor Krummenacher or Mark Goodman's Magnet. The Syd Barret of CVB, Greg lives in Sant Cruz and plans a solo CD for 1999.
Dubbed "the Craziest Drummer in Town", El John played with A Great Laugh. He can still be seen playing with Victor's solo band, as well as Nefertiti Jones and others. Once upon a time he also played with Poi Dog Pondering, and you know what? He also married a woman from Tasmania! The lovely Elinor Van Ommen. This photo is of them being married by Victor in Inverness in 1994.
played too many different instruments in Camper Van Beethoven from 1983 until 1989, when they figured that out. Also played with Eugene Chadbourne 1987-1991 in the amazing Eugene Van Beethoven ensemble, and HF 1989-1994. Seen in "Jack and Jill", where he pretty much only played guitar (as per rules) and sang, playing the role of Jack (or Jill), he nows tours the great cities of Northern Europe with Mark Linkous' acclaimed Sparklehorse. A recent solo CD "Scissors & Paper" has just come out. Jonathan comes from a mixed genetic background which is illegal to discuss over the internet. He is the Puppet Figurehead for Magnetic and as such pretends that he knows what is going on.
played drums on the First HF CD, also played in 501 Spanish Verbs and Sluggo. Presently plays in Slombis. Dave, too, wears glasses. His mom plays the viola.
A zen monk, Shido played bass with 5th Business. He used to play in various all-Japanese prog rock bands ('til they caught him at it) and even in one that was supposed to sign some major label deal until, on the eve of the signing, the already-celebrating band took to the stage smoking marijuana, at which point the execs dropped the deal.
Possessed of incredible psychokinetic abilities, Jane plays the bass sometimes with her fingers and sometimes with her mind. She did so with Jack and Jill, where she acted the part of Jill (or Jack?) for several years, also with DENT. She once did similar things with a band called Third Rail that made a record called "End It", after which they did. She analyzes great minds, and can do so for you, here.
a trombonist and bassist from the Whitefronts, Katl (aka Karl Bartlett) was part of the CVB horn section with Dave Costanza. He was playing in a band called Freightbrain in New Mexico, but presently lives in Nashville where he works at some high-tech recording studio. He co-produced the first Granfaloon Bus CD with Jonathan Segel and recently did the mastering of Jack and Jill's "Fancy Birdhouse"
a graphic artist, Edie is the Mistress of Illusion for Magnetic. She's been doing graphics and photos for us for years. Since the beginning of CVB. In fact, that's her house they were in front of on the cover of their third record. She presently resides in New Yawk Citee, although she's from Napa, Ca. There are various sordid stories about why the Winogrades ended up there, none of which we will tell you.
Also known as Chris XYZefos, Chris escaped a harrowing tour of duty with King Missile to settle into San Francisco as the bassist for A Great Laugh. He produced both Alison Faith Levy's Fog Show and Victor Krummenacher's Saint John's Mercy. Sometimes Chris has beard. He is not adverse. He is post-bear. Here's a brief Chris discography
Chris has written a huge tour diary of the legendary Great Laugh tour. SEE IT HERE!
Tom is an amazing musician, adept on trombone, sackbut and several other arcane instruments, pulling mediaeval knowledge from thin air. He plays with Eskimo after escaping the clutches of Hieronymus Firebrain. He is also a Citroen mechanic and he knows how to fly a plane, and does incredible metal work, see it at his Luniform site.
